If you’ve been following our blog series, you’ve probably begun to realize that Westcliffe is not lacking in activities. When you find yourself staying at The Lamp Post Lodge or the neighboring Hillside Colorado Cottages, you won’t be twiddling your thumbs trying to find something to do. In fact, the only difficulty you’ll have is trying to schedule out everything you want to do during your mountain retreat in Southern Colorado. We’ve certainly given you quite a few options to choose from, and will continue to do the same! From visiting the wolves at Mission: Wolf, taking in the incomparable view of the stars at the Dark Skies of the Wet Mountain Valley, to partaking in the countless activities and stunning views that the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park has to offer.
Yet, in between whitewater rafting and zip lining over the canyon, we understand the need for a little rest and relaxation. So, in this blog, we’ll be giving you a few more low-key activities you and your loved ones can enjoy in between your adventures.
Jones Theatre
Incorporated in 1992 to provide the residents and visitors of Westcliffe a Center for the Performing Arts, the historic Jones Theatre is ideal for a rainy day, or for when you and the family just want rest your feet for an hour or two. Not only does the theatre play the most recent blockbuster movies, but they also have performances (including Shakespeare) of some of theatre’s classic shows and youth activities for your young ones to enjoy. Before you visit, be sure to check their website for the current movie and theatre show schedules since the offerings are always changing.
Silver Cliff Museum
Okay, we understand that this museum isn’t in Westcliffe, it is located just a stone’s throw away in the sister town of Silver Cliff and houses some incredible artifacts and memorabilia that gives you a backstory on the rich history of the area. The building itself was built in 1879 and has never moved locations (although there have been a few renovations, of course). Entry is free and you’re certain to learn some fascinating things about Silver Cliff and Westcliffe and their mining history.
Horseback Riding
One of the most relaxing things to do in the area is to unleash your inner cowboy and enjoy horseback riding around the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The choice is yours where you go on your guided tour, but you’re guaranteed to enjoy the lay of the land. Bear Basin Packtrips also provides hunting trips and can take you to some of the most beautiful fishing spots that Southern Colorado has to offer.
Enjoy the View
Remember, there is also no shame in taking a day to relax outside of your room and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Whether you book a room at The Lamp Post Lodge or the Hillside Colorado Cottages, you’ll have breathtaking views no matter which way you turn. As your online Colorado travel guide, we recommend at least reserving part of a single day to enjoy the nature we’re proud to call home and relax. There are plenty of more activities to come, so get ready to add them to the list!
